The History of ETHS Rowing

Building a Tradition of Excellence, One Stroke at a Time
Evanston Township High School Rowing has grown from a developing club program into one of the school's most exciting athletic success stories. Built on determination, teamwork, and a tremendous commitment from athletes, coaches, and families, ETHS Rowing has become a program that brings students together both on and off the water.
What makes ETHS Rowing special is not simply its success in competition, but the opportunity it provides. Unlike many rowing programs that require substantial participation fees, ETHS Rowing has worked to keep the sport accessible to students regardless of their financial circumstances.
In recent years, the program has experienced remarkable growth, expanding its roster, developing competitive varsity and novice crews, and establishing a stronger presence at regional regattas. That growth reflects years of hard work from coaches, athletes, parents, and supporters who believe in the program's future.
A major milestone came in May 2026, when rowing achieved varsity status at ETHS, marking an important step in the program's evolution and recognition within the school's athletic community.
By the fall of 2026, ETHS Rowing had grown to approximately 110 athletes, with expanding boys and girls squads and a strong pipeline of novice rowers. Competitive performances at events such as Head of the Rock and Head of the DRC demonstrated just how far the program had come.
But perhaps the greatest achievement is the community that has grown around the team. From early morning practices and long regatta weekends to the countless hours volunteered by families, ETHS Rowing has become much more than a sport. It's a place where students develop confidence, discipline, friendships, and a sense of belonging.
The story of ETHS Rowing is still being written, and the best chapters may be yet to come.
